This sculpture commemorates Seaham's long association with coal mining, providing information on the three pits which once operated in the town. (Dawdon, Seaham and Vane-Tempest Collieries). Behind where I stood to take this photo the Vane-Tempest pit was standing until as recently as 1993. Nowadays, where the pit stood is now a housing estate.
