Explorer Map 308 - Durham & Sunderland

A walk for any time of the year, making plenty of use of railway walkways, - both the Lanchester Valley Walkway and the Deerness Valley Walkway.
Because of this, the walk is very straightforward. In only one section is there an uphill climb, which involves crossing a farm field.
Navigation is easy, though there is one section (at Esh) where you need to follow the instructions and have a map to hand.
All-in-all, a walk for anybody to enjoy.

Some new mapping software is now availabe which you may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!

Start from the Broom Park picnic area (off the B6302 Durham - Ushaw Moor - Esh Winning Road), - NZ250 415.
Head Eastwards out of the picnic area to find the clearly marked Lanchester Valley railway walkway to Langley Park and Lanchester. Follow the walkway to Langley Park.
In Langley Park, turn left where the walkway meets the road, and follow the road into Langley Park's centre (by the War Memorial). Here turn right on Quebec Street (the manin street in Langley Park) and follow the road all the way to the modern cemetery at the West end of the village.
Opposite the cemetery is a farm track heading up the hill towards Esh. Where this farm track comes to a field, at a gate, bear half right to the track on the other side of the field. Continue up hill to Esh village.
Cross the road and head past Esh Cross to Esh Hall. Just before the Hall (where signs clearly say "Private"), turn left down a track and then almost immediately turn right to cross a small field and pass through a gate and then a stile to meet a grassy track that heads East.
Where this track meets a farm track, turn right and head past Hag House Farm to the B6302 road.
Cross the road and immediately turn left onto the Deerness Valley walkway.
Continue along the walkway past Ushaw Moor to return to the Bear Park picnic area .
