Outdoor Leisore Map OL19 - Howgill Fells

One of the best walks enjoyed by the Grey panthers.
Previously, the walk has involved crossing from Great Rundale Tarn to High Cup Nick by walking along Backstone Edge.
This walk takes the route, instead, from Great Rundale Tarn to High Cup Nick by following the Maize Beck.
This particular route is somewhat shorter and much simpler, BUT in wet weather, - or following wet weather, it may prove to be very wet underfoot. In dry weather, it is remarkably straightforward.

Some new mapping software is now availabe which you may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!

Start from the car park in Dufton village (NY 68975 24987).
Turn right out of the car park, then take the signposted footpath that heads North Eastwards out of Dufton at the corner in the road.
This is a broad, stony track that takes you to Pusgill House and then continues upwards, - past Dufton Pike (on your left), to eventually end up at a shooting box. The track rises gradually all the time, with the elevation at the shooting box at 680 metres.
At the shooting box, head South East over rough ground for a short distance to find Great Rundale Tarn.
Walk clockwise round the edge of the tarn to where the Maize Beck exits.
Now follow the beck Eastwards and then South Eastwards. There is a "footpath" beside the beck resulting from many people having passed this way beforehand.
Follow the Maize Beck to the bridge which crosses it at High Cup Plain.
Now head South Westwards to High Cup Nick.
From High Cup Nick, the return to Dufton is via the very obvious and easy to follow Pennine Way footpath.
