Explorer Map No OL30, - Yorkshire Dales (Northern & Central Areas)

A walk which is best enjoyed on a day when there is good visibility. The views from Barningham Moor are superb, - looking Northwards there are views of Teesdale (across to Barnard Castle), and Southwards to Swaledale.
The ascent up to the top of Barningham Moor is quite gently, though the descent to the Stang Plantation is quite steep and follows the faintest of tracks.
Navigation is very straightforward, though the above-mentioned descent needs a bit of care, - you leave a clear grassy track (which might appear to be the way forward) for the unmarked path downhill.
Although the walk involves moorland walking, most of the route is easy to follow.

Some new mapping software is now availabe which you may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!

Start the high street in Barningham village (NZ 08438 10306).
Follow the road Westwards out of the village. When you come to a right hand bend in the road, continue staright ahead on a grassy track. When you come to a small aquaduct, and a ford over a stream, follow the track Southwards and uphill until you come to an old railway carriage.
At this point follow the track beside the wall, keeping the wall on your left, for the next couple of miles. The track heads uphill to Barningham Moor, following the ancient Badgers Way Stoop.
At the summit of the moor you find a Trig Point. Continue for about 500 yards past this Trig Point.
You come to a gate on your left. At this point, follow the grassy track almost due North, which gradually swings North Westwards above Osmaril Gill.
Where the grassy track continues almost due West, you will find the route down to The Stang Plantation. This path is VERY faint and descends steeply to the gate leading into the plantation.
Once in the plantation, follow the forestry track North West until you come to a minor road.
Here, turn right and continue along the road and then farm track almost due Eastwards.
Just before Bragg House Farm descend over rough pasture to a walled lane that leads to the Barningham - Scargill road.
At the road turn right, and after about 200 yards you come to a signposted Byway on your left.
Follow the Byway back to Barnngham.
