Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)

This moorland walk starts and finishes at the very popular village of Hutton-le-Hole. In season, this village can be VERY busy. At any time of the year, however, it is a very attractive place for basing walks.
On the return leg of this walk, the village of Lastingham is visited. Here, the Church of St. Mary's is an essential stop.
The walk is suitable for just about anybody, - with no steep gradients or navigational problems.
Although moorland is crossed, the paths are clear and well defined.
The "half-way point" are the ruined iron ore staithes on top of Rosedale Bank. These provide shelter (if needed), and there is a superb view of Rosedale from this point.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!

Start from the main car park in Hutton-le-Hole (SE70507 90243). Fee to be paid; toilets available.
Head Northwards along the road outside the car park. Just before a sharp right-hand bend there is a footpath (through a gate) over the moors. Follow this footpath Northwards.
Where it meets a farm access road, turn left and follow the road for about 400 yards. Then resume walking on the moorland footpath where it obviously meets this road.
Continue Northwards until you meet a shooter's track. Here turn half right and head North East. At a sheep fold, continue North East on a footpath that leaves the shooter's track.
When you meet the road, turn left, and follow the road to Rosedale Bank. Before the bank starts to drop down into Rosedale, take the track on the left to the old iron stone workings.
Now retrace your steps to the road, and turn right. When a broad shooter's track is seen on your left, follow this track South to the Ana Cross.
From the Ana Cross, follow tracks South to Lastingham.
Continue South into the village itself, and turn right to come to the Church of St. Mary.
Continue along the road out of Lastingham towards Hutton-le-Hole.
Take the road leading to Bainwood Head Farm. Just before the farm, turn left and follow the field footpath back to the road. Cross the road, and take the footpath back to Hutton-le-Hole.
