Explorer Map OL27, - North York Moors (Eastern Area).

A delightful walk for any time of the year, - but especially
so at times when the North
York Moors Railway is operating (providing that you are a
                steam train buff!).
The walk starts from the car park adjacent to Grosmont Station,
then follows the Eastern side of the valley overlooking the track
                between Grosmont and Pickering.
The walk returns from Moorgates on the Western side of the valley,
passing through the village of Goathland before following the
route of the original railway track bed back to Grosmont.
For the most part, navigation is fairly straightforward.
There is one steep ascent and one steep descent on the outward
                leg of the walk.

For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the
            above link.
(Overlay made with Version 4 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you
may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for
free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having
installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus
YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the
Grey Panthers website, - just use QUO!!

Start from the North York Moors car park adjacent to
Grosmont Station (NZ82690 05297), - fee to be paid.
Take the footbridge onto the station, then cross the railway lines
at the level crossing. Walk uphill for about 400 yards until you come
to a waymarked footpath on your right.
This path takes you through woodland, to emerge at a farm track. Turn
left andfollow the farm track uphill for a short distance.
On your right you will notice a Trod which crosses a field and enters
more woodland. Follow this Trod, and then continue along the clearly
defined broad path through the woods. This brings you out eventually
            at Green End Farm.
From here continue to Hollin Garth Farm.
Follow the wall line to Hill Farm, and then take the footpath that
overlooks the railway line below you.
DO NOT descend to the railway line, but continue along paths to Sheep
            Bield Farm.
From here there is a steep descent to a ford over the Eller Beck.
Don't cross the ford, but continue on the path beside the railway
track on the East side, until you come to Goathland Station.
From the station take the path South Eastwards until you come to the
road. Turn left and walk uphill for a few yards.
When you come to a farm road (to Patridge Hill Farm) turn right and
follow this road / track all the way Southwards until you come to
the road that leads to the A169 from Goathland.
Turn right and head uphill along the road to Moorgates.
At Moorgates take the old railway track bed to Goathland.
In Goathland take the well signposted railway trail (the old railway
            track bed) back to Grosmont.
