Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (West)

A walk that takes in sections of the Cleveland Way as it follows the coast, together with some road walking and walking using farm footpaths and farm tracks.
Surprisingly perhaps, there is a bit more "upping and downing" than one might realise. For instance, Whitby involves quite a bit of clibing up and down. However, there are no gradients to particularly test one.
Navigation is reasonably straightforward. The only problems were on the last leg between Dunsley and Sandsend, where cultivated fields involved skirting round the fields rather than crossing directly over them.
On a fine day, a thoroughly enjoyable coastal walk.

Start the car park that is sitaued at the entrance to the Mulgrave Estate (NZ861 125). There is meant to be a charge for use of this park, but on the day we were there the man wasn't available to collect the money.
Head North West along the coast from this car park to the other car park in Sandsend at NZ860 128 (there is a charge for parking here) where there are toilets. Follow the signposted Cleveland Way North West along the cliffs from this car park.
At NZ850 145 take the signposted footpath South to Lythe. However, after about 100 yards, turn sharp right to leave this path and instead take the path to Overdale Farm.
From Overdale Farm, head South along the waymarked footpath to Over Dale and Lythe.
When you reach the A175, turn left and enter St. Oswald's churchyard.
From the Churchyard return to Sandsend down Lythe Bank (pavement on the left all the way down).
From Sandsend, walk along the beach all the way to where some rocks form part of a slipway (NZ881 119). Leave the beach at this point, and continue along the promenade to Whitby. When you reach West Cliff, head up to the top, and the monument to Captain Cook that overlooks the harbour.
From here. descend by steps and the road to the harbour front, and follow the road to the Swing Bridge (NZ899 110). Here take the first (narrow) street uphill and heading due West, - past Whitby Museum on your left.
When you reach the A174 roundabout, head straight across to follow the B1460 to Ewe Cote and Sneaton Castle (on your left), a religious building.
Just past Sneaton Castle, take the waymarked field footpath to Newholm village.
From Newholm village, take the track at NZ866 105 that heads North West, and after a couple of hundred yards take the waymarked footpath North to Dunsley.
The footpath signs to Dunsley are very clear and easy to follow.
Leave Dunsley by Dunsley Lane.
If you take the signposted footpath back to Sandsend from Dunsley, you will need to exercise a bit of care in map reading. The footpath crosses cultivated fields, which involves a bit of a detour.
The footpath brings you back to the Mulgrave Estate car park.
