Outdoor Leisure Map OL26, - North York Moors (West)
A pleasant countryside ramble, where the highlight is a visit
to the ancient church of St. Gregory's Minster in Kirkdale.
The bulk of the walk is on tracks and country lanes, where walking is
        very easy indeed.
However, there is a section of the walk between Wombleton and Kirkdale
where the footpath is across farmland, and a number of stiles are encountered.
Some of these stiles proved to be remarkably awkward.
All in all, though, there are no great navigational difficulties (providing
you use a 1 : 25000 map and follow the field patterns), and there are
        no gradients of anysignificance.

Start from a lay-by on the main A170 Helmsley - Pickering
Road, about 1/2 mile to the East of Nawton (SE66162 84897).
Immediately by this lay-by is a signposted footpath to Wombleton which
        heads due South East.
There are way marks on the footpath to Wombleton, which need to be looked
out for, as some are somewhat hidden. By using your map and following
the field boundaries, the footpath takes you to Wombleton Back Lane.
Head South down the Back Lane, and about half way down the lane there
is a cut across to the village High Street.
BY the Plough Inn, take the minor road that leads to the village playing
fields. Here there is a waymarked footpath that heads East towards Welburn.
Where this footpath meets Welburn Back Lane, cross this minor road and
take the signposted footpath beside the Hodge Beck (crossing the A170
        at one point) to Kirkdale.
Where the footpath reaches the minor road by the ford, take the lane to
        St. Gregory's Minster.
From the Minster, take the well used and well defined track Northwards.
The track splits in some woodland, - take the left track at this point.
When you reach the old mill at Hold Caldron, take the footpath to the
right of the mill and keep the Hodge Beck on your left as you head West
        and then North.
This track eventually leads to a footbridge over the Hodge Beck at SE658
878, and a track that heads uphill through woodland to Skiplam Grange
        Farm.
Take the waymarked footpath at Skiplam Grange to the minor road (Skiplam
        Road).
Here turn right and head Northwards for about one mile.
When you come to the minor road at SE650 885, turn left and head in a
Westerly direction. When you come to Howldale Lane, head South.
About 2 miles down the lane, at SE645 862, a signposted track branches
off the road. Take this track until you come to the A170 at Beadlam. Turn
left (now Nawton) and continue on the footpath beside the A170 until you
return to the lay-by you started from.
