Outdoor Leisure Map OL26, - North York Moors (West)

A pleasant countryside ramble. The route uses farm tracks and farm footpaths, with a short amount of walking on minor roads.
The walk can be done at any time of the year.
The route takes in Kirkbymoorside, Gillamoor, and Hutton-le-Hole. All of these places are worth exploring in their ownrights. Much has been written about these towns or villages in other places, so they won't be elaborated on here.

There was only one place where navigation proved to be a bit tricky. The footpath before and after the Spaunton Quarry is not at all clear in places, and although there are plenty of signs in the Quarry itself it is quite possible to go off-track outside the Quarry area. Good map-reading and a compass are essential here.

Start from the car park in Kirkbymoorside that is just off the High Street at SE69553 86612.
Head Northwards along the Gillamoor Road until you come to a minor road on your right signposted to the Golf Course.
Just before this minor road reaches the Golf Club, a footpath is signposted.
The footpath takes you through a wooded valley to High Park Farm, where it meets the Woodhead Field Lane. Turn left and continue to Gillamoor.
Head North East along the road to Gillamoor's Church. Just past the Church, stop at Surprise View. The footpath to Hutton-le-Hole leaves the road just past Surprise View and takes you, - using farm footpaths, past Grouse Hall to Hutton-le-Hole.
Care with navigation after crossing the small beck to the East of Grouse Hall Farm. It IS possible to take what looks to be a "good" path but which subsequently proves to be a wrong path.
From Hutton-le-Hole continue in a Southerly direction until you have crossed the beck at the edge of the village.
At this point, take the track which heads gently uphill, and which then leads you to a wooded track that continues uphill, - first in an Easterly direction, and then Southerly, before a sharp turn in an easterly direction to take you to Bottomfields Lane.
Head South down Bottomfields Lane.
Two fields from Lingmoor Farm, the lane continues East between hedges. The lane is not signposted at this point and it IS possible to miss the turn.
Head East along Lingmoor Lane until you reach Ings Balk Lane. Head South until you come to a minor road.
At this point, there is a footpath that heads South West to Spaunton Quarry. It is essential to use a 1 : 50000 map to follow the footpath with respect to field patterns at this point.
Continue South West to Keldholme and then West back to Kirkbymoorside.
