Outdoor Leisure Map OL30, - Yorkshire Dales (North)

This walk is best undertaken with good visibility so that you can enjoy the views. In poor weather, the value of the walk would be considerably diminished.
There is a long stretch of moorland walking, where the footpath can be lost fairly easily. For this reason, it is sensible to have a map and compass, and know how to use them.
The descent from the moorland back down into Coverdale was over some very rough ground, with tussock grass.
The final part of the walk along the Cover valley is very gentle and easy to follow.

Start from Carlton village hall car park (SE0690184723).
Walk Northwards along the road out of Carlton for a short distance, before taking the waymarked footpath to West Scrafton village.
From West Scrafton, take the road South West and continue along the minor road to Swineside. Where the road ends, continue in a South Westerly direction along the waymarked footpath crossing Swineside Moor and Hindlethwaite Moor.
This footpath eventually joins a rough track to continue in a South Westerly direction.
At SE04360 78220 this track meets a boundary fence, where there is a finger post to direct you onto the footpath that heads North back down into Coverdale. This footpath is faint in parts, and very rough to walk on.
When you finally reach the River Cover, turn right to follow the waymarked footpaths to Horsehouse, Gammersgill, and Carlton.
