Hawnby is a TINY village in the North York Moors. And yet, in the First World
War it provided unusually high numbers of young men for the Forces (encouraged
by the "Fighting Parson" of Hawnby). By October 1916, 45 young men had
given their lives. The newspaper from that date is framed in the Church. In the
Churchyard, Private W Garbutt of the Green
Howards is buried in an official war grave, - dying (of wounds?) in February
1918.
